The Texas Senate passed a bill in the early hours of this morning banning abortions after 20 weeks, making Texas safer for women and children. This is the same bill that was filibustered by liberal Senator Wendy Davis in the last special session. Governor Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and many others were instrumental in the passing of this legislation. Democratic State Senator Eddie Lucio supported the bill despite fierce opposition from his party, delivering a speech late Friday night in favor of protecting Texas women and children. He noted that "A person is a person, no matter how small", and called on his colleagues to join him in supporting life. Former Senator Rick Santorum released a statement after the passage of the legislation saying, "The Declaration of Independence states that we are endowed by our Creator 'with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.' Life is first for a reason. Because without life, no other rights matter." Senator Santorum plunged into the battle earlier this week, holding a press conference and mobilizing members of his Patriot Voices organization to support the bill. HB 2 passed in the Texas Senate 19-11. "Today the Texas Legislature took its final step in our historic effort to protect life. This legislation builds on the strong and unwavering commitment we have made to defend life and protect women's health. I am proud of our lawmakers, and citizens who tirelessly defended our smallest and most vulnerable Texans and future Texans." - Governor Rick Perry

The 20 week abortion ban that failed due to Democratic Representative Wendy Davis' filibuster last week is being brought up in a special session called by Governor Rick Perry.
The "Pro-Life Omnibus Bill" would: - ban abortion after 20 weeks (when science shows that the unborn can feel pain) - require that abortion clinics follow the same health and safety regulations that ambulatory surgical centers are held to - require that abortionists secure admitting privileges at local hospitals - require doctors to personally administer chemical (RU486) abortions, rather than dangerously sending a woman home before the child is expelled Read the bill here. Even if you don't live in Texas, you can still show your support by tweeting using the hashtag #Stand4Life. Wendy Davis is not planning on filibustering again, but we still need your help! Learn more here. After Wendy Davis managed a 10 hour filibuster of S.B. 5 this last week in the special session, causing the bill to fail passage, Governor Perry has called another special session. This bill, which would have outlawed abortion after 20 weeks, had to pass the state legislature by midnight of June 25, but because of the effort of the pro-abortionists the bill did not pass by the deadline. The new Special session, to address this legislation is to begin on Monday. S.B.5 breakdown on LifeSiteNews shows this; "According to Texas Alliance for Life, SB 5 is an unparalleled opportunity to protect women and innocent human life. SB will do the following: 1. Increase abortion facility safety standards to the level of ambulatory surgical centers to shut down Gosnell-like abortion providers in Texas,2. Require the 18,000 RU-486 abortions performed each year be done according to FDA safety standards,3. Require physicians who perform abortions to be qualified to treat life-threatening complications after botched abortions and have privileges at a local hospital, and4. Ban abortions on unborn children beginning at 20 weeks after fertilization, when scientific evidence clearly shows babies can feel pain." Perry stated at the National Right to Life Convention; “No life is trivial in God’s eyes. The fact is — who are we to say that children born into the worst of circumstances can’t live successful lives? In fact, even the woman who filibustered the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances. She was the daughter of as single woman; she was a teenage mother herself. She managed to eventually graduate from Harvard Law School and serve in the Texas senate. It is just unfortunate that she hasn’t learned from her own example that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters.” |
